Pinback Buttons - My Adventure Making Them
Pinback buttons. I’ve been obsessed with them for a few years. I guess when they first started to get popular is when I hopped on the band wagon. I know, cliché hipster attention whore, that’s me. Anyway. It’s worked out pretty well these last few years. I’ve gotten to meet some amazing people and see some awesome things. I’ll never forget the moment I first decided to make my own custom pinback buttons. I had always been interested in fashion and I would randomly think of quips and one liners that I thought would be funny pinback buttons. After I started to really get into I would imagine graphics and memes that would be cool buttons. My imaginary pinback button designs became more complex and one day I decided. FUCK IT. I’m going to make my own buttons and who gives a shit if I don’t make any money, I’ll at least enjoy the process. So I bought a pinback button maker.
At first it was hard to get the hang of it. The instructions helped a little bit haha. But I learned mostly from trial and error. I was excited about creating my own wacky buttons so I kept at it until I got used to the machine. It’s pretty easy once you have a little practice.
As soon as my button maker arrived I cleared a space on the floor and spread every thing out. I thought I would make buttons while I watched my shows, multitasking right? I had my designs printed and cut and I started to prep the machine.
This machine is really great. It’s fast, but not only is it fast, it’s also pretty safe. Not once during my pinback button adventure did I almost chop off a finger. That’s definitely a plus when working with heavy machinery. Another great quality about this particular machine is it’s durability. It’s probably created tens of thousands of pinback buttons in it’s life time. I know I’ve made a few thousand myself and I bought the machine used, so I can only imagine what kind of wacky button fun it’s been through.
