Cool Buttons
Cool Buttons are like Funny Pins, except they have to be cool, duh. They can be funny, fuck, fine, it doesn’t matter if they are funny but they have to be cool. For example, mustache buttons are cool buttons, because mustaches are cool. Pinback buttons for obscure indie bands are cool buttons, and about any button with bacon on it is considered a cool button. This is Button Pins 101, are you listening?
Are Wacky Buttons cool buttons? No! The coolest buttons are ones that express something that is fleeting and of the moment. Cause buttons are a great example of this. A button that said “#feminaziwalk 2014” would be considered cool. Half of the coolness would come from the implication that it supported a charity is some way, which is super in right now, and the other half would come from it’s disposability. Unless you had some magical feminazi moments, you’re not going to be wearing the pin after 2014, so it makes it seem like you’re on top of current events and ‘plugged in’.
God! Being cool is fucking complicated. It’s much easier to give zero fucks and see where that gets you, sometimes you get lucky and magically become cool. All this market data and cool set research is exhausting.
Anyway, Kony is a great example of cool buttons. It has all the requirements, disposability, charity, current events. The reason the Kony campaign took off the way it did is because of the viral marketing they placed on youtube. Then when kids bought the ‘starter kit’ it included cool buttons with nice graphics that kids would wear around. That spread the idea and soon people who never saw the video wanted to watch it, and buy the starter kit, and wear the cool buttons.
It doesn’t matter what size or shape a button pins is to be a cool button, it can be any size or shape as long as it’s cool. Sometimes cool people or institutions will give away buttons just to promote their brand. Anytime any charity event is giving away free buttons you can up with your cool with them, and who knows, possibly get lucky, giggity.
